More than 600 desk-bound police officers could be moved out of their offices and onto the streets by next summer. PSNI Chief Constable Matt Baggott is reviewing the work of hundreds of officers doing administrative tasks. He believes too many are spending too much time filling in forms. As part of his plan to move them on to frontline duties, he has asked district commanders to justify the role of every deskbound officer by January. The PSNI command team will then assess their responses and decide how many officers will be transferred. It is understood Mr Baggott wants to redeploy at least 600 back on to the streets by June. He also wants to reduce the amount of bureaucracy in the legal system by giving officers greater discretion to deal with minor crimes like anti-social behaviour instead of referring all cases to the Public Prosecution Service. BBC NI Home Affairs correspondent Vincent Kearney said: "Matt Baggott believes the moves will increase public confidence in the police's ability to tackle crime and quicken the pace of the criminal justice process." The Policing Board has been briefed about the plans Attachments:
