British troops have spent eight years on the ground in Afghanistan, and have sustained heavy casualties in recent months with the stepping up of operations against the Taliban in southern provinces. More troops in Afghanistan were wounded in action in July 2009 than in the whole of 2006, as UK forces took part in a major offensive in Helmand province. The UK mission in Afghanistan has been focused on securing the southern province of Helmand, so it comes as no surprise that the vast majority of British fatalities, 175 people, or over 85%, have taken place there. Although Britain's involvement in Afghanistan began in 2001, it was not until 2006 that a large contingent of British forces arrived in Helmand.
