HUNDREDS of mourners wore red shirts to honour a Merseyside soldier killed in Afghanistan. But for once the funeral’s footballing theme did not reflect passion for a local team. Instead the T-shirts celebrated Trooper Phillip Lawrence’s unlikely devotion to Manchester United football club. His family said the Birkenhead 22-year-old’s sense of humour and ability to stand out from a crowd helped him endure the numerous ribbings about his choice. He was laid to rest yesterday following his death last month when the tank he was driving was caught in an explosion. Trooper Lawrence’s baby daughter Jessica, dressed in her own tiny football shirt, rested on her mum Amy’s shoulders as her dad’s coffin passed. She was just nine-months-old when he died. His coffin was carried by fellow soldiers of the Light Dragoons and draped in a Union Jack flag. He was buried in the sunshine at Landican cemetery in Arrowe Park Road, Woodchurch. Liverpool Echo >>
