A complaint of alleged police failure of duty during an incident in Larne last month is being investigated by the Police Ombudsman's Office. A Larne family said they feared for their safety after a large crowd of loyalists gathered outside their home in the early hours of 27 July. The family accused police of escorting the gang to their house. Police said the matter was being investigated and that policing a public order incident was not an easy task. A savage attack on a man at a bonfire in the town earlier in July is being linked to the loyalist protest. The victim was taken to hospital with serious head injuries after the attack in the Cairngorm Drive area on 10 July. It is understood the attack was carried out by loyalist paramilitaries who wrongly believed he was part of a gang carrying out burglaries in the town. The attack on the 22-year-old man was one of a series of attacks on homes and vehicles on 10 July, which are understood to have been carried out by the same group. The group of men are believed to be members of the South East Antrim UDA and UVF. Watch Video >>
