Among the thousands of British troops involved in Operation PANTHER'S CLAW was a female combat medic who accompanied infantry soldiers into the heart of battle to provide life-saving treatment. 24-year-old Private Kerry Smith dealt with sweltering temperatures often topping 50 degrees as she accompanied soldiers from 2nd Battalion The Mercian Regiment (2 MERCIAN) into fierce fighting through a rabbit warren of mud compounds and across rugged terrain as they tackled Taliban fighters during Operation PANCHAI PALANG. The operation, whose name translates to 'Panther's Claw', involved around 3,000 British troops clearing one of the last remaining Taliban strongholds in Helmand province over the last few weeks.
