More troops will cause rise in conflict, warns DC Extra personnel in Afghanistan will led to increase in violence
Published: 29 May 2009
Personnel in Afghanistan should expect a sharp rise in violence as troop numbers are increased this summer, Nato’s Deputy Commander warned.
Lieutenant-General Jim Dutton said that the ‘spike in conflict’ would be much the same as that experienced by US Marines when they arrived in the country last year. For several weeks after their arrival fighting worsened, before a ‘marked reduction’ three weeks later.
The general consensus within the MoD is that this summer will be particularly bloody, as Afghanistan faces a presidential election.
The latest deaths in the country bring the total of British military fatalities since the beginning of operations to 163.
