International and Afghan troops have killed 60 militants and made a record drugs haul in an operation in southern Afghanistan, the US military has said. Its statement said the four-day attack targeted the town of Marja in Helmand province - a Taliban stronghold. The troops seized 92 tonnes of opium poppy seeds and other drugs, "severely disrupting" a key narcotics centre and command hub of the insurgency. BBC News >>

This report is very carefully worded, so as not to openly slur the British forces but to do so by inference. 'International forces' meaning the coalition of British and US, but inferring that 'the US are only in the area and they have already done more than the Brits have done in eight years.' They captured 92 tonnes of poppy seeds - which will give the CIA the 'in' they need with the local warlords. An agreement to 'release' this crop back to the warlords will result in a quick 'victory' for the minimal US force that will be in the area and, more importantly, little or no casualties. The CIA wil work with the warlords to reduce the export of the resulting heroin, allowing the warlords a reasonable return on their crop and with the added value in allowing the US Govt to trumpet their success in 'the war on drugs'. More domestic vote-gaining. The report says that 'all friendlies were removed from the area'. This is straight out of the Vietnam Aide memoire; by moving people to 'safe havens', this frees the areas for carpet bombing and free-fire zones. Basically then anyone outside these camps can be safely regarded as 'the enemy'. This will run and run for as long as it suits the 'agencies', and will get the US Govt the right publicity at home, for a fraction of the cost (life-wise) that Iraq did.

Thanks Stevie. My confidence in our members savvy is justified by your post. I must admit - you took it to the next phase, a whole step further than my first scepticism went on first reading this. Just look what the US has done around Kabul. This was their step 1 in that area too.
