Delays in defence projects have left front-line troops in Afghanistan serving with almost obsolete equipment, a cross-party committee of MPs says. Twenty of the Ministry of Defence's biggest projects are a total of 40 years late, the Public Accounts Committee said in a critical report. Bills rose by more than £200m over the past year making forecast costs £28bn. Defence Equipment Minister Quentin Davies strongly denied the delays had led to gaps in frontline capability. The delays have meant a 12% increase in the estimated total cost of the projects. The committee's chairman, Edward Leigh MP, said there were serious consequences for troops fighting in Afghanistan Full Report >>

This would be because politicians can't afford to supply our troops with the means to fight a war, AND have their expenses paid at the same time. It might mean, one less porno to watch, or the moat not getting cleaned, or even worse (god forbit).... a new hifi system? did i forget anything?? ah yes the profit from the mortgage on the flipped house, that was already paid for by the tax payers.... but, deary me i forgot to declare that....(but one does appologise though)....

We could make sure that all second homes are sited in the Green Zone with a nice view of the poppy fields and the Helmand River. I would let them claim for that!

It might be worth looking at how many of the MPs on the Defence procurement committee are also directors of the companies contracted to provide kit.....probably more than a few names common to both.

Why did the name Rumsfelt pop into my mind just now. The info about this will be in the public domain but I think most of the population of this country has just become so apathetic about all this that we just let them get away with it. I'm sure there are many UK 'Grummonds', and recently I've been reading about UK equivalents of 'Blackwater'. This has only one direction to go - onward! Jeez....I'm glad I won't be around to see the end result.
