A council row has broken out over the flying of the Irish flag at a gymnastics competition in Newry. The Irish National Gymnastics Association tournament this weekend can play the Irish national anthem, but not fly the Irish flag, the council said. Full Story >>As far as I remember Newry is in the UK! Why is the National anthem of a different country being allowed as the signature anthem of these games? The council has not gone far enough. This is an slap in the face to all who served on Op Banner.

I have worked with several companies who allowed both Newry and L'Derry to take different holdiays to other branches, as they did not take the Twelth holiday (Bank Holiday). Some Royal Mail drivers even grumbled about having the Royal Cipher on the doors of their vehicles - which I think has stopped now anyway, except for the lorries. To be honest there is no way that the National Anthem (British) would be played, unfortunately it is just a given fact. Simarlarly the Union Flag is not flown at any council, government or police establishment unless for a specific occasion. The PSNI flag is not even flown, unless for a death in service.

How often is the tri-colour flown then? (The rest of my reply could not be posted here!)
