Sri Lanka's Tamil Tiger rebels have declared a unilateral ceasefire - but the country's defence minister has rejected it as "a joke". The offer of a truce comes amid growing international concern for thousands of Sri Lankan civilians trapped in the fighting. Tiger rebels are surrounded in a tiny area of roughly five square miles on the northeast coast of the island, along with approximately 50,000 civilians. A statement from the Liberation Tigers Of Tamil Eelam said they called a ceasefire "in response to the calls made by the UN, EU, the governments of India and others" over humanitarian conditions.
