Hi
I wonder whether you could help me. I recently purchased an old suitcase from a charity shop and on the front in white writing has the following:-
Sgt. H Berry - 14465680 s p company 1st Battalion - the kings regiment Embark- SS Emp/Clyde Hong Kong – Liverpool
I’ve done some research and it looks like he travelled on the Empire Clyde and from what I can see, his battalion served in Burma in 1944 but I would be obliged if you could perhaps provide me with any further information on the owner of the case.
Kind Regards

My name is William Ritson and I was brought up within the kings regiment and traveled with them until I was 16 and dad came out. My dad W.H. Ritson served in the regiment for many years. Harry Berry was a very good friend of dads I believe they grew up together in Stretford Manchester and both joined the Kings. I remember as a kid in Berlin about 1950 that Harry stayed over at our flat on many a weekend, along with others, usually the worse for wear after a night out. On one occasion he slept in a dry bath with a blanket and somehow turned the tap on during the night. I don't think he ever lived it down. After a stint in Korea during the troubles, the regiment was posted to Hong Kong in1954, and we as a family sailed out to them. We sailed home on the Empire Clyde, which explains the writing on the case. Dad died some years ago, and if Harry is still living he will be in his mid 80s. Hope this has been some help. W.Ritson

William, I have had this reply from Dawn Smith. Thank you for posting as you did. If it's OK with you I will give her your email address in case she needs any more info. Thanks again, Ed
Hi Eddie
What a delight your email has been, although its made me cry! Thank you so much for responding.
I treasure the case and it has pride of place in my family room. I have printed off a photo of the empire clyde and have read everything I could find on the internet in search of harry. I'd given up hope ever knowing anything more about the case's owner and what happened to him. Owning a piece of history and now knowing a little bit about harry makes me feel like he's part of my family now. I will treasure the case forever.
Once again THANK YOU for taking the time to respond and I wish you well.
Kind Regards
Dawn Smith
