SAMLIB.dll is a Windows Direct Link Library file Tommo. It is essential to windows security system. Spyware/malware is usually the culprit here. If you have your XP Disk you could try an 'Install over existing system' to replace the file. The missing file lives in the C:\windows\system32 folder. It is possible to find a copy of the file and try to put it back but:
1) you would have to do it using the recovery consul (using CMD interface) 2 ) This is probably just the first file in a list of files that cannot be found, each one would cause the same error after you replace the one before it.
I would go for a full UPDATE reinstall. Sorry mate.

It's not the end of them necessarily Tommo. There are cheap or free recovery apps that can retrieve files even from a formatted HD. If you get one and install and run it quickly after a fresh install you can recover the pictures. If you know somebody who is handy with computers you may be able to recover your existing system using the methods I described above. It's gobbledy gook to those who are not experienced but anybody with a reasonable amount of experience may recover it for you.
Everybody:
Back up back up back up. It's heartbreaking to lose treasured pictures, and loss of work can be a right blow too.

Tommo, AVG is a good choice, it's what I use. The free version is very good and should protect your machine from any threat. Also, get a good anti-Spyware app. such as a2 (A Squared) as anti-virus apps don't always pick up Spyware/Malware. See THIS post.
