A British soldier has been killed by an explosion in southern Afghanistan, the Ministry of Defence has confirmed. The serviceman, from the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, died after his vehicle came under attack in Babaji District, central Helmand Province.
His family have been informed.
The soldier was operating with the Light Dragoons Battlegroup when he was killed on Wednesday.

It is with great sadness that the Ministry of Defence must confirm that a soldier from the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, operating with The Light Dragoons Battle Group, has been killed.
The soldier was killed as a result of an explosion that happened whilst on a vehicle move in the Babaji district, central Helmand province, on the evening of 2 September 2009.
Spokesman for Task Force Helmand, Lieutenant Colonel Nick Richardson, said:
"Everyone in Task Force Helmand is deeply saddened by the death of this brave soldier who died working to make Afghanistan a better place.
"Our thoughts are with his family and we offer them our deepest and heartfelt condolences at this tragic time."
Next of kin have been informed and have asked for a period of grace before further details are released.
