Hundreds of previously unseen files about Britain's deadliest sporting tragedy - Hillsborough - are to be released by police. Sky News >>It still is a mystery to me just why these files needed to be kept hidden from the public domain in the first place. What could possibly be 'against the public interest' in them anyway? I don't suppose we will ever find out even when these details are released. We can but hope.

Going by what last night's C4 news said, even this announcement has not escaped a degree of spin. Apparently the story was carried for most of yeasterday by several news stations - it was not until the evening that it emerged that the actual story was quite different - Jacqui Smith, the Home Secretary, rather than having 'told the police to release the files' as was allowed to trumpeted all day, was in reality only 'intending to meet the senior officers and CPS' to 'see' what documents could be released. As to why they were witheld...the most important thing, apart from peoples' careers, is the damage factor to the government, both then and now.
