Two British soldiers were killed in an explosion in Afghanistan yesterday, the Ministry of Defence has said. One of the soldiers was from The Queen's Royal Lancers and the other was from the Royal Engineers. Both of their families have been told. The MoD has said the soldiers' deaths are not being linked to the violence that took place as the country went to the polls to elect a new government. Nearly four million people are thought to have cast their vote, under threat of extremist attacks. The two British soldiers were on vehicle patrol in the Lashkar Gah district of the notorious Helmand Province when they were killed. Both were serving as part of Combined Force Lashkar Gah. A spokesman for Task Force Helmand, Lieutenant Colonel James Carr-Smith, said: "It is with great sadness I must inform you that a soldier from the Queen's Royal Lancers and a soldier from the Royal Engineers were killed... west of Lashkar Gah. "They were attached to the 1st Battalion Scots Guards Battlegroup. The soldiers were part of a ground domination patrol when they were struck by an explosion. "They will be greatly missed and their sacrifice will not be forgotten. We will remember them." The number of British losses since the conflict in Afghanistan began in 2001 now stands at 337.
