A British soldier has been killed by an explosion in southern Afghanistan today. The serviceman died in the Nahr-e Saraj district of Helmand province. He was from 2nd Battalion the Princess of Wales Royal Regiment, attached to 1st Battalion the Mercian Regiment. His family have been informed. Lieutenant Colonel James Carr-Smith, spokesman for Task Force Helmand, paid tribute to the soldier. There have been 294 British troops killed in Afghanistan since the invasion of 2001.
