I have been asked to publicise the following by City Secretary, Liverpool (Captain Mick Hunt):
70TH ANNIVERSARY OF GENERAL DE GAULLE’S APPEAL TO THE PEOPLE OF FRANCE – AN INVITATION TO WW 2 VETERANS TO THE ROYAL HOSPITAL CHELSEA
Friday 18 June 2010 marks the 70th anniversary of a radio broadcast by General de Gaulle on the BBC from London in which he appealed to the French people to refuse to accept defeat and to continue the fight against the enemy. British veterans are being invited to attend an event to mark the occasion being held at the Royal Hospital Chelsea.
The broadcast is of great significance to the French people and this year’s 70th anniversary is to be marked by a high profile ceremony at the Royal Hospital Chelsea in the presence of President Sarkozy. The French Armed Forces are planning to send a large detachment of personnel including ceremonial troops and bands. Members of the UK Armed Forces will also take part as the spirit of joint UK/French co-operation is emphasised.
Several hundred French veterans will be coming to London for the event and the French Government wish to invite a contingent of British veterans in order to thank them for their contribution to the War. This event is of added significance as we remember the 65th anniversaries of VE and VJ Day this year.
This promises to be a memorable ceremony within the superb grounds of the Royal Hospital where it is a privilege to attend any event. After the ceremony, veterans will be invited to join some of the Chelsea Pensioners for lunch in the Great Hall.
The number of places available is strictly limited to those receiving an invitation from the French Government. Any veterans, association branches or other organisations wishing to receive an invitation should contact the MOD via the details below by Monday 31 May at the latest. Please note that anyone wishing to attend will need to be able to arrive at the Royal Hospital by 9.45 a.m. on Friday 18 June by their own means or those arranged by individual organisations.
