The Simpsons, including beer-loving and doughnut-obsessed Homer, have been chosen to front a Government campaign to tackle obesity. The Department of Health is spending around £640,000 to sponsor episodes of the popular cartoon between now and Christmas. But they seem reluctant to fully endorse the eating habits of Homer and his family Marge, Bart, Lisa and Maggie, using the slogan: "Supporting the Simpsons: sometimes." The campaign will use cartoon characters designed by Wallace and Gromit creators Aardman Animations. At the beginning of each episode they will be seen sitting in the Simpsons' house eating unhealthy food. The junk food will then disappear by a range of means to be replaced by more nutritious alternatives. Public health minister Gillian Merron said the sponsorship was a significant attempt to reduce obesity. She said: "We are serious about tackling obesity and supporting people to improve their health, and always look for new and innovative ways of doing this with our target audience. "The Simpsons are a much-loved, close-knit family facing some of the everyday challenges that modern-day families go through. "They provide a popular and engaging way to get the message to real-life families about simple ways of improving their diet and activity for a healthier lifestyle." Attachments:
