Reading 'The War of the Running Dogs' ISBN 0-09-962110-x By Noel Barber
It is an account of the political and military/police action in Malaya from 1948-58. The parallels to the history of Op Banner are many and manifest. A lot of the lessons learned in Malaya were employed in Op Banner. This was another 'War' against a mainly hidden enemy where the government of the time: Atlee/Churchill, worked to minimise the efforts of the SF and would have liked those who served in the 'Emergency' to quietly disappear. It's an informative account full of real characters, including British civilians who lived in the colony at the time. Some of these civilians lived with Sten Guns installed in their nurseries along with the children's cots and used armour plates scavenged from WW2 tank hulks fixed to the sides of their cars!
