US forces in Iraq suffered their highest casualties last month than any month since September 2008. May saw 24 US soldiers killed, bringing the total number of US casualties since the 2003 invasion to just over 4,300. US forces are due to be off the streets of cities and main towns by the end of June, while combat operations across Iraq are due to end by September 2010. Civilian deaths from violence in Iraq fell sharply in May, according to Iraqi government figures. The defence, interior and health ministries gave a civilian toll of 124, down from 355 in April, AFP reported. BBC Report >>

"US forces are due to be off the streets of cities and main towns by the end of June" I take that to mean that all military operations will by then be carried out by covert hit squads and private military companies, who will look like soldiers and be armed like soldiers, but will be 'civilian advisors'. The level of casualties among these 'civilian firms' have not, and will probably never be broadcast, or perhaps even documented. 'Plausible deniability' - you can't admit to something that you don't know exists or is happening.

Stevie, They will probably try that too, but I fear they will bite off more than they can chew. By the end of 2010 the tribes will revert to settling old scores. The death squads will be many and varied, with many private agenda's (most of which will involve the covert dollars which will still be pouring into the 'Iraqi' state.) Insurgents will pour back in with the backing of some of the warlords and we will be back to or worse than 2000. This time there will be no S.H. to wield the power of the secret police and imperial guard, no fedayene to carry out the dirty work.
Round three?

Without a doubt Ed, but it'll be cloaked in secrecy and played out away from the glare of the media or the public. It will be a war every bit as vicious and bloody as the worst times of the 'uniformed' war, but will be sadly identical to the rule of Saddam, just run from Washington.
