LONDON (Reuters) - A British army major is being investigated in a probe into allegations that he was awarded a medal based on exaggerated reports of bravery in Afghanistan, the defence ministry said on Saturday. A defence source named him as Major Robert Michael Armstrong, 35, who was attached to the 1st Battalion The Royal Irish Regiment. Armstrong was awarded a Military Cross medal in March for action against the Taliban in Helmand province of southern Afghanistan. He was arrested by military police last week after a complaint from a fellow officer, the Sunday Telegraph reported. A defence source confirmed the arrest.Any scandal which cheapens the British Army's award system should be dealt with in double quick time. This scandal, if it is proved, should be corrected asap.
