Pitching for a house bargain
Life in a tent... camping to buy a house They are pitching for a new home... and they shall not be moved. About 50 people have set up tents and are camping close to former army homes in Ballykelly, County Londonderry. The queuing began on Friday evening and the houses will be up for grabs next Saturday, 8 May. It is a long wait, but for people hoping to get a foot onto the property ladder, it is worth the time spent at the roadside under canvas. There are more than 300 houses up for grabs but just 20 will be sold for £30,000 each. "We are hoping to get a very good bargain," said Stephen McLean from Limavady who began his long sit-out on Friday night. "Where else would you get a £30,000 mortgage?" Mr McLean said family, friends and neighbours were all in the queue. "There are a lot of folk from Limavady. We started the queue so that people from the town would not miss out on this." He said his family was helping keep his tent manned day and night until the Saturday sale. "There are so many people here that we would need a public toilet," he said. In the long wait, they are hoping that someone will come to their aid.
